About the team:

Huawei Canada's Advanced Optical Technology Lab focuses on advanced R&D in high-performance optical communications and networking. Our expert team specializes in transmission algorithms, systems, physics, and AI-driven optical network management. About the job:

  • Working on the next generation of short-reach and data center interconnect (DCI) networks. In this role you will focus on the design and simulation of Intensity-Modulated Direct-Detection (IMDD) transmission systems operating over cutting-edge Hollow-Core Fiber (HCF). Given the physical properties of HCF, efficient signaling and equalization methods are fundamental to achieve cost and power efficient optical links.
  • Modeling of end-to-end non-coherent optical transmission system.
  • Modeling of Hollow-Core Fiber and the impact of gas absorption on the transmission.
  • Exploring efficient signaling and equalization to combat channel induced fading profiles.
  • Studying the impact of high launch power on the system reach and performance.

The total target annual compensation (based on 2,080 hours per year) ranges from $58,000 to $104,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.

About the ideal candidate:

  • Currently enrolled in Master’s/PhD program in Electrical Engineering program or equivalent.
  • Solid background in non-coherent optical fiber transmission and reception.
  • Deep understanding of direct-detection systems, transceiver limitations, and noise penalties (e.g., RIN, thermal noise, shot noise).
  • Familiarity with programming languages like Matlab and/or Python.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
  • A publication record on similar topics is an asset.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a co-op program and be registered for an official co-op work term for the full duration of the employment period.
