About the role
AST SpaceMobile's standard text
AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Data Analyst – Power BI to join the Enterprise Applications Data Team. This role owns the design, development, security, and documentation of AST’s Power BI reporting across manufacturing, HR, and leadership functions. Working closely with business owners, IT Security, and the MES/ERP teams, the Data Analyst turns data from Tulip MES, NetSuite ERP, Rippling, SharePoint, and the enterprise data lake into trusted, governed dashboards that support operational and executive decision-making.
The role also enforces AST’s Power BI Dashboard Development standards — group-based access, service-account connections, row-level security, and complete documentation — and helps scale self-service analytics across the company.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, publish, and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models for the AST & Science Global, AST Leadership, Midland HR, and Midland Manufacturing workspaces.
- Partner with the named Business Owner of each report to gather requirements, define KPIs and metric definitions, and validate data accuracy before anything is published to production.
- Build dimensional (star-schema) data models, DAX measures, and Power Query transformations; write targeted SQL queries that extract only the data required — never full-table loads.
- Source and integrate data from Tulip MES, NetSuite ERP, Rippling, SharePoint/Excel, and the enterprise data lake, consuming curated silver and gold layers and working with data engineering on the bronze/silver/gold (medallion) design.
- Work with the MES and architecture teams to define reporting data points so Tulip tables capture the fields needed for manufacturing KPIs such as work-order progress, step durations, cycle time, and efficiency.
- Implement Row-Level and Object-Level Security (RLS/OLS) based on the ISA-95 scope block (legal entity, site, area, work center) and functional domains, using Microsoft Entra ID security groups only — no individual user access.
- Configure data connections with approved service accounts or service principals, with credentials managed in 1Password; manage gateways and scheduled refresh to remove dependencies on individual user accounts.
- Apply Power BI workspace governance: admin group at creation, role-based workspace access, App-based distribution, and Contributor enablement so trusted business users can build self-service reports from published datasets.
- Produce and maintain the required documentation for every report — Architecture Overview (ARCH), Data Source Details (DS), Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Access & Security (ACCESS), and Issue Log (ISSUE) — so any team member can support it without help.
- Diagnose and resolve refresh failures, credential issues, and data-quality problems; perform root-cause analysis and work requests through the Enterprise Applications Jira queue.
- Optimize report and model performance (e.g., incremental refresh, query folding, model size reduction) and recommend improvements to the reporting platform.
- Train and support business users and Contributors on Power BI usage, standards, and self-service best practices.
- Support ad-hoc analysis and executive reporting requests for operations, manufacturing, HR, and leadership stakeholders.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Statistics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Data Analyst, BI Developer, or similar role, including at least 3 years of hands-on Power BI development in an enterprise environment.
- Strong SQL skills (joins, CTEs, window functions, query optimization) against relational databases or data warehouses.
- Proven experience with Power BI Desktop and Service: data modeling, DAX, Power Query, workspaces, Apps, gateways, scheduled refresh, and RLS.
- Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines and integrating data from multiple enterprise systems (ERP, MES, HRIS, SaaS, files).
- Experience defining and tracking operational KPIs and translating business questions into measurable, documented metrics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300); Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700) a plus.
- Experience in manufacturing, aerospace, or another regulated production environment; familiarity with OEE, yield, throughput, and cycle-time reporting.
- Experience with MES and ERP data, especially Tulip and NetSuite.
- Experience with cloud data platforms such as Azure (Data Factory, Data Lake, Azure SQL), Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, or AWS (S3, Glue, Apache Iceberg).
- Experience with service principals / Azure AD app registrations, Power BI deployment pipelines, and Git-based version control.
- Working knowledge of Python for data preparation, automation, or forecasting.
- Exposure to AI-enabled analytics (e.g., Copilot in Power BI, anomaly detection, forecasting).
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to data accuracy.
- Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences and present findings clearly to executives.
- Proven ability to collaborate across Manufacturing, HR, Finance, IT Security, and Enterprise Applications teams.
- Documentation discipline — treats documentation as part of the deliverable, not an afterthought.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Technology Stack:
- Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, DAX, Power Query (M), Power BI Apps and gateways.
- SQL / T-SQL; Python (preferred).
- Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) security groups and service principals; 1Password.
- Data sources: Tulip MES, NetSuite ERP, Rippling, SharePoint, Excel, enterprise data lake.
- Microsoft 365 (Excel, Teams, SharePoint), Jira, Visio.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a standard office environment and use a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to work on-site in Midland, TX, including occasional time on the manufacturing floor to understand processes and validate data.
- Ability to travel occasionally between AST sites as business needs require.
