About the role

Staff Software Engineer

About the Role

Hinge Health uses software, including AI, to deliver care for joint and muscle health, and has expanded into pelvic health, migraine, and digestive health. We partner with employers and health plans to provide this care at scale, improving members' quality of life and reducing healthcare costs.

The Visits team owns scheduling for all of Hinge Health, along with the visit experience in our member app and in the tools our care team uses. That covers HingeSelect (our network of specialists, in-person providers, and surgeons) and visits in every Hinge Health program, from physical therapy to migraine and GI care.

Next, we want every visit at Hinge Health to feel like the best doctor's office you've been to, minus the clipboards and hold music. Members should be able to find the right visit, book it in a few taps, show up prepared, and afterward see what happened and what to do next, whether the visit was by video or in person. Providers should be able to act on a visit without leaving our tools, from referrals to labs to prescriptions. Each visit leaves a structured record that shapes the next one, from the follow-up booking to AI experiences that help members act on their care.

As a Staff Software Engineer on Visits, you'll be the technical leader behind that experience: you'll set the architecture other teams build on and still ship the hardest parts yourself, while visit volume grows many times over. Your strength might be mobile, web, or the services behind them. There's central work here for each, and nobody is expected to be an expert in all three. It's 0-to-1 work at a startup's pace, backed by the resources and data of a market leader.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Lead projects from ambiguity to launch: Partner with product, design, clinical, and operations leaders to shape a multi-quarter roadmap, then lead the cross-team initiatives that deliver it, keeping parallel workstreams predictable and shipping the hardest pieces yourself.
  • Extend the scheduling platform: Own the architecture of the system every Hinge Health visit is booked through as it adds more specialties, more providers, and real-time booking with outside provider networks, so it can absorb much higher volume without a matching rise in manual coordination.
  • Close the loop after each visit: Design encounters, our record of what happened at each visit, what it addressed, and what comes next, as the one source the member app, care team tools, scheduling, programs, billing, and our AI experiences all trust.
  • Bring new specialties onto one platform: Design the visit platform so each new specialty is mostly configuration rather than a rebuild, and own the contracts between Visits and the teams around it, from programs and the member record to care team workflows.
  • Run what you ship: Own reliability across the team's services, retire whole classes of failures, lead risky migrations off third-party systems, and hold a high bar for the security and privacy of member health data.
  • Raise the engineering bar: Write the team's most critical design docs, lead design reviews, and set patterns that teams beyond ours adopt. Bring AI into every stage of how we build software, coach senior engineers into tech leads, and help raise the hiring bar.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 8+ years of non-internship, full-time professional software engineering experience.
  • Professional experience with at least one of the languages or frameworks we use: TypeScript, Go, React Native, or React.
  • Experience as the technical lead for a project spanning multiple engineers or teams, from technical design through launch, working closely with product and design partners.
  • Professional experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code) in your day-to-day engineering work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience setting technical direction across multiple teams in a 0-to-1 or rapid-growth environment.
  • Experience shipping product features powered by LLMs or agentic workflows to production.
  • Experience building scheduling, booking, or marketplace systems at scale.
  • Experience with clinical data and healthcare integrations, such as FHIR or HL7 data, EHRs, claims, labs, or pharmacies.
  • Deep familiarity with our core stack: React Native, React, TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS, GraphQL, Go, gRPC, Postgres, Temporal, Kafka, Docker, and AWS.
  • Experience in healthcare, insurance tech, or other high-compliance industries (HIPAA, SOC 2).
